Denver: "Then and now" photo comparison between now and wayback in 2014

When we drove into Denver earlier this month, we were stunned by the changes. I was briefly disoriented by the new and ongoing construction; the lack of recognizable landmarks. It had only been 19 months!

Roads through empty lots now run through towering apartments and offices. New grocery stores. New restaurants. With around 40,000 more people in the area, places seem more crowded than I remembered. More traffic. More honking.

In 2014, many parks, train stations, and buildings were only recently completed. I can't imagine how people who grew up here, feel.

I haven't found any good pictures or time-lapses of Denver's skyline, though there seem to be plenty

Images: 4 photo galleries that are more than just entertaining

I stumbled on these four collections within a couple weeks of one another and realized that, unlike, many on-line collection of cute animals or photobombs, each of these collections have larger implications-- mortality, commonality, ownership, and appearance. Oh, and they're entertaining too!

Beer pictures from around the world

 Mediterranean Sea from Greece
(back when Corono was still independently owned)

At my last job, it was tradition to send co-managers a beer-centered vacation photo to let him/her know what a good time he/she was missing out-on back at work. The key was to send it mid-shift (thoughtful, I know). Here are a some of my favorites from that time and a few similarly themed from other vacation pictures.

Knowledge: Are kids worth it?

My little sister after getting into the make-up

Here are a few interesting articles about whether to have or not have children. If your mind is made up and you read nothing else, at least take a look at the last link (27 reasons why kids are the worst). It will brighten your day.

1. Does Fatherhood Make You Happy?

Studies reveal that most married couples start out happy and then become progressively less satisfied over the course of their lives, becoming especially disconsolate when their children are in diapers and in adolescence, and returning to their initial levels of happiness only after their children have had the decency to grow up and go away. When the popular press invented a malady called "empty-nest syndrome," it failed to mention that its primary symptom is a marked increase in smiling.
Psychologists have measured how people feel as they go about their daily activities, and have found that people are less happy when they are interacting with their children than when they are eating, exercising, shopping or watching television. Indeed, an act of parenting makes most people about as happy as an act of housework. Economists have modeled the impact of many variables on people's overall happiness and have consistently found that children have only a small impact. A small negative impact  [Full article on Time].

2. Does having kids make you less happy?

However, research that takes into account parents' different circumstances indicates that parents who are able to spend more time taking care of their children "take much less of a happiness hit from having kids," according to economist Betsey Stevenson.
We may be answering the wrong question. The question is not how much happiness children bring or take, but how good is the happiness? We need to return to a precept that social philosophers and religious texts have long extolled: that a good life is not one centered around squeezing as much pleasure out of life as possible [Full article on CNN].

3. A former post on my sister's redecoration of our house

Philadelphia: Home Sweet Home (for now)

A few pictures of our new place with comments for everyone that has been asking! I tend to remain somewhat impersonal on this blog, prefering to share links and writing I think will appeal to an anonymous audience and not just friends, but as part of the series of posts I'm wiring on our travels (The Big Move) I'll post a few pictures of the buildings we settle in at each stop.

 V. from living room

I like to describe the view as "expansively Philadelphia". You can see a lot from our window but the view is mainly warehouses, boats, harbor cranes, abandoned piers, highways, and a heliport. Philadelphia has a beautiful skyline and some nice bridges, but I've come to appreciate the view since the majority of what Philadelphia actually looks like is what you see through our window.

Cruise ship or our apartment building?

As you can see from the picture, our building is surrounded on three sides by water. This increases security as well as isolation. We don't have

The struggle to right oneself

The photography of Kerry Skarbakka.

These photos are taken with wires in an entirely controlled environment. The photographer often uses himself as the subject due to the discomfort and potential danger of the work. The struggle to right oneself. His other exhibits are worth checking out as well.
